Deforestation Amazon increased again
Brasilia – The last five months of 2007, only few months after the Brazilian president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva proudly said to have succeeded in curbing the Amazon deforestation rates with 50% in the last two years, the actual deforestation of the Amazon has increased enormously.
Joao Paulo Capobianco, secretary of the Brazilian ministry of environment said that the detected deforestation is ‘extremely worrying’. The National Institute for Space Research (INPE) used satellite imaginary to detect the deforestation. The images show that in the period August-December an area of at least 3.235 squared kilometres of rainforest disappeared. That exceeds four times the deforestation measured in the same period in 2004. Never before was such a high rate of deforestation measured in those months.
